Whistler ER physician since 2007

"I grew up in Manitoba and moved to BC in 2003 after medical school to finally be a ski bum. After finishing residency at UBC, I travelled all over in my first few years of practice - much of BC and Alberta, the Arctic, India, China, and a trip to Everest as base camp doctor. I met my wife (a counsellor) in Vancouver in 2004. We lived in Squamish for 5 wonderful years before kids, then finally settled in Whistler in 2010 to raise our 2 daughters. We love it here, and can't imagine living anywhere else.
In winters we ski on the hill with our girls and in the backcountry with friends. Each winter we spend more time surfing on Vancouver Island where I also offer house calls in Port Renfrew - the waves typically arrive the day after the snow, from the same North Pacific storms. I spend summers on my mountain bike pedalling all over the incredible trails of the Sea to Sky corridor. My family is my priority, but outdoor time with friends is important too.
Over my career, I've seen access to primary care get much more difficult for patients, as clinics become more difficult to operate due to high overhead and staff turnover. In ER we are seeing more people for simple problems that have no where else to get help, as many residents don't have a family doctor. We also witness the limitations of the over-proliferation of virtual care, especially since it exploded during covid.
My aim with BettrCare is to get doctors and patients back together, face to face, in an old-fashioned practice style that is slower, more engaging, and more satisfying for both of us."
